97.5 Y-Country Medical Minute – New Year’s Realistic Resolutions

Aired: 12/30/2019

A new decade is just 2 days away and our social media feed is filled with New Year’s resolutions and friends posting ‘new year, new me’.   According to a resent Forbes and U.S. News article, up to 80% of New Year’s resolutions were failed by February.  The difference between a successful resolution and a failed one is based upon setting realistic expectations and setting one’s self up for success.  This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses tips on how to set realistic New Year’s resolutions.

New Year Check-Up

A new year is a great reminder for us to schedule annual wellness exams, dental visits, and other health related exams for your entire family.   If you do not have a family doctor, with locations in Cassopolis and Niles, Cassopolis Family Clinic Network provides primary care and support services for everyone.

Setting Your Goal

Whether your goal is to eat healthier, exercise more, or other – start small.  Often, individuals plan for a large amount of change at the start of the year which makes it difficult for one to adapt.   For a healthier diet, one might eliminate sweets one month and then eliminate dairy the next.   For exercise, possibly adding an exercise routine twice a week for a month and then increasing to three times a week.   Whatever the resolution, start small.

Be Prepared

Even though it is a new year, we are often faced with stress and anxiety.  Rather than reaching for the bag of potato chips, piece of chocolate, or binge watching a show on Netflix – take a 15 minute walk or enjoy 5 minutes of meditation.

Sleep

According to the CDC, a third of U.S. adults do not get the 7 hours recommended amount of sleep each night.  Lack of sleep has been linked to obesity and other chronic diseases.   Adults should try to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

Cassopolis, MI, December 17, 2019 – The holidays are a time of family, food, and generosity. “Our mission at Cassopolis Family Clinic Network (CFCN) is to provide compassionate healthcare to people in our communities. 97.5 Y-Country Medical Minute – Stress-Less Holiday

Aired: 12/16/2019

The holiday season is a time for family and friends to gather and celebrate life’s many blessings.  While this is a joyful time, it can also become overwhelming and stressful.  This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses tips on how to have a stress-less holiday season.

You Time

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is really important to set aside time for yourself.   Try going for a walk, meditating, listening to calming music, or even scheduling a spa day.

Healthy Habits

The holiday season is filled with big dinners, holiday beverages, and sugary treats.  It is extremely important to eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, avoid sweets, exercise and get at least seven hours of sleep each night.   If you are worried about over eating, try having a healthy snack before you go to avoid overindulging.

Simplify Your Holiday

If you are easily overwhelmed, remember to keep it simple.  Having a get together at your home?  Keep it simple.  Get everyone involved and delegate.   Rather than taking care of the entire meal on your own, ask everyone to bring a dish to pass.   If you know hosting an event in your home will cause you extreme stress and anxiety, know your limitations and simply say no.

The holiday season is the #1 most dangerous time of the year for alcohol-related accidents and deaths.  This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses tips on how to celebrate the holidays with friends and family responsibly.

Think Ahead

Designate a sober driver – Before heading out to enjoy an evening of dinner and adult beverages, decide who will be the designated driver.  Be sure to ‘Thank’ your driver by paying for their meal and/or non-alcoholic beverage.

Schedule a ride – Party buses or limos are a great way to safely enjoy an evening with your closest friends without the worry of drinking and driving.

Be the Hostess with the Mostest

Hosting a holiday party?  Offer fun and festive non-alcoholic drinks for the designated sober drivers.   A few suggestions:  Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Cider, Shirley Temples, Sherbet Punch.

Last Minute Decision

When faced with a situation where you have had too much to drink and do not have a designated driver, stop and consider your options.

  • Call a friend or family member
  • Ask the bartender to call a taxi or shuttle service
  • Call an Uber
