97.5 Y Country Medical Minute – Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Aired: 10/22/2018

“According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.2 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet,” The United States Government, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Website.     Medicines play an important role in treating certain conditions and diseases, but they must be taken with care.   This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses the importance of safe disposal for prescription medications.

 Safe Disposal Options

When medications are no longer needed, they should be disposed of promptly.  Consumers and caregivers should remove expired, unwanted, or unused medicines from their home as quickly as possible to help reduce the chance that others accidentally take or intentionally misuse the unneeded medicine, and to help reduce drugs from entering the environment.
