97.5 Y-Country Medical Minute – Prenatal Care

Aired 11/26/2018

You’ve taken a pregnancy test and it’s positive.  Once the news has started to settle in, what happens now?   Do I wait until I am further along to go to call and schedule a doctor’s appointment?   This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses the importance of prenatal care.

Prenatal care is important for all women even if you’ve been pregnant before and feel great.  According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services,” Women who receive prenatal care have fewer problems with pregnancy, labor, delivery and the postpartum period than women who don’t receive prenatal care.”

What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care is medical care you receive during pregnancy.  Your healthcare provider will check on you and your growing baby at each visit.

When should I schedule my first appointment?

Be sure to schedule your first prenatal care appointment as soon as you think you’re pregnant.  Your provider will make sure you’re healthy along with providing you with your due date.   Even if this is not your first pregnancy and you seem to be feeling ‘normal’ prenatal care is essential to ensure you have a healthy 9 months.

This is my first pregnancy, where do I go for prenatal care?

It is important to find a healthcare provider for your prenatal visits you are comfortable with.  If you are not sure of where to go, contact your regular doctor’s office and they should provide you with a few local options to call for an appointment.   It is really important to ensure the healthcare provider will accept your insurance or offer options or assistance if you are uninsured.
