Cold and Flu season is officially here.  But what do flu symptoms encompass?   Is the flu the same as the stomach bug?   And what is this Norovirus?  This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses what the Norovirus is and what you can do to protect yourself.

What is the Norovirus?

The Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea.  Anyone can get the norovirus from having direct contact with someone who has it, consuming contaminated food or water, or touching your face after touching a contaminated surface.

Is the Norovirus the same as the flu?

According to the CDC, norovirus and flu may share some symptoms, but the flu is a respiratory illness caused by influenza virus, not norovirus.

When are you contagious?

Individuals can be contagious hours before they develop norovirus symptoms lasting until a few days after the symptoms have stopped.

What are the symptoms of norovirus?

Most people who get sick from norovirus will experience diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain.
