97.5 Y Country Medical Minute – Dental Sealants

In honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month, this week’s Y-Country Medical Minute topic covers the importance of dental sealants for your child.

What are dental sealants?
A dental sealant is a layer of thin plastic that is painted on the chewing surface of a child’s teeth and acts as a barrier to help prevent plaque and acids from forming a cavity.

How is it done?
This only takes just a few minutes at your dental office. Your dentist will clean and dry the teeth, place a gel on each tooth’s chewing surface preparing the teeth for the sealant. The gel will be rinsed and dried. The dentist will then paint on the sealant and will use a special light to dry the sealant.

Who can get a dental sealant?
Everyone is able to receive a dental sealant however children are encouraged to receive a sealant to help prevent cavities from forming.
