Aired: 11.12.2018
For some, the holidays are a joyous time where family and friends gather together to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even New Years. For others, the holiday season can be extremely stressful and can trigger depression for a number of reasons. This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses helpful hints on how to beat those holiday blues.
- Limit Alcohol – Consumption of alcoholic beverages may affect mood negatively.
- Get Plenty of Sleep – Try to sleep for at least 8 hours each night.
- Learn to say ‘No’. Overscheduling can increase chances for stress and anxiety.
- Be open to new traditions – If gathering with friends and family is not on your holiday list year, consider beginning a new tradition and volunteer in the community.
- Exercise regularly – Even if only for 10 minutes a day, exercise is great for the physical and mental health.
- Avoid Overeating – Prepare yourself to eat smaller portions, eat fruits and vegetables, and forgo a ton of sweets this holiday season.
