97.5 Y Country Medical Minute – Be Summer Heat Smart

Temperatures are rising in southwest Michigan and it’s a great time to remind ourselves to be summer heat smart and safe.   This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses the importance of being aware and prepared during the hot summer months.

Stay Healthy!

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Eat a balanced meal rich in lean protein, fruits, and vegetables
  • Wear your sunscreen
  • Wear clothing that covers your skin to protect against UV rays.
  • Seek medical care immediately if you or your child has symptoms of heat-related illness.

Stay Smart!

  • Never leave infants, children, or pets in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked open.
  • Dress for the heat: wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, choose light, breathable fabrics such as cotton, and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
  • Stay cool with cool showers and baths.
  • Head indoors:  When the heat gets unbearable, try indoor activities at your local YMCA like basketball, swimming, yoga, etc. or head to the movies.
