97.5 Y Country Medical Minute – Back to School Tips – Week 2 – Backpack 101

Remember when your parents took you back to school shopping and you just had to have the coolest new style of backpack there was regardless of whether it fit right or not?   This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses backpack safety for your child.

 Choosing the Right Backpack

  • Choose a backpack with wide padded shoulder straps and a padded back.
  • Remind your child to always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain their muscles.
  • Adjust the pack so that the bottom sits at your child’s waist.
  • Pack light – Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. The backpack should never weight more than 10% to 20% of your child’s body weight.
  • Consider a rolling backpack is your child must tote a heavy load. Just a note:  These type of backpacks can still be carried upstairs but can be difficult to roll in the snow and may not fit in some lockers.
