97.5 Y-Country Medical Minute – Beat Those Winter Blues Before They Start
As daylight saving time ends this weekend, we are quickly reminded that winter is right around the corner. This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses what you can do to get ahead of the winter blues.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons and is most common during the late fall and early winter months.
Some symptoms of SAD one may experience can be: low energy, overeating/weight gain, and excessive sleeping.
Beat the Blues
- Light Therapy – Purchase a full spectrum lightbulb and place the lamp on a timer to turn on two hours before your morning alarm. This will allow you to receive the benefits of daylight before you wake to start your day.
- Exercise Regularly – Be sure to exercise at least 3 times a week.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight – Eat a diet full of fruits, vegetables and lean protein.
- Plan an outdoor adventure or vacation to look forward to.
