97.5 Y-Country Medical Minute – Mosquito Bite Prevention
Last week the State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued a statement encouraging state residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Seven cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) have been confirmed in Southwest Michigan. This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly covers tips on how to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites.
To prevent mosquito bites, use EPA registered insect repellent while outdoors. To find the right repellent for you and your family, go to the United States Environmental Protection Agency website.
Infants and Children
Be sure to always follow instructions when applying insect repellent to children. Do not use insect repellent on babies younger than 2 months old. Rather, dress your child in clothing that covers their arms and legs. Mosquito netting can be purchased to cover strollers and baby carriers to add an extra layer of protection.
If you frequently work outdoors, permethrin spray can be purchased to spray on clothing and gear. Permethrin is an insecticide that kills and repels mosquitoes. Always follow the instructions for use on the repellent container. Permethrin products should not be used as a normal insect repellant on skin.
