Southwest Michigan is a great place to be during the summer months. Not only do we have great beaches and parks, but the abundance of local fruit farms truly makes it a great place to be. This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses the benefits and importance of eating fruit.

Why is it important to eat your fruit?
• Fruits contain important nutrients including potassium, dietary fiber, folic acid, and vitamin C.
• Most fruits are naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories. None have cholesterol.
• A few of the health benefits:

  • May reduce the risk for heart disease, including heart attack and stroke.
  • Part of a healthy diet may protect against certain cancers.
  • May reduce the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Am I eating enough fruit?
The amount varies based on your age, sex, and level of physical activity.
The United States Department of Agriculture has suggested serving amounts listed at ChooseMyPlate.gov.

How do I add more fruit to my diet?
• Keep a bowl of whole fruit on the table, counter, or in the refrigerator.
• Buy fresh fruits in season when they may be less expensive and at their peak flavor.
• Use fruits to sweeten a recipe instead of adding sugar.
