97.5 Y Country Medical Minute – Handwashing 101 – January 22nd, 2018

Handwashing is one step you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.

Here are a few suggestions for when you should wash your hands.

  •  After touching garbage
  • Before eating food, especially when eating out at a restaurant
  • Before and after caring for someone who is sick especially during cold and flu season
  • After using the restroom, helping a child use the restroom, and changing diapers
  • After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose
  • Before and after caring for a cut or wound

Handwashing 101

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water
  • Apply soap and lather hands by rubbing them together
  • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds
  • Rinse your hands with clean, running water
  • Dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry

No soap and water?

There are times when soap and water are not available.  To reduce the number of germs on hands, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.  Note: Sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs but is a good alternative when soap and water are not available.
