97.5 Y Country Medical Minute – Get Up and Get Moving!

Spring is officially here!   After a long winter of being indoors now is a great time to set your fitness goals and get outside to enjoy the warmer weather.   This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses the importance of physical activity and how much physical activity is needed for a healthier you.

Why is physical activity important?

  • Emotional health: can decrease depression and lower chances of anxiety and stress
  • Allows you to move around easier during regular daily activities
  • Increases chances of a longer, healthier life
  • Increases chances of a better night’s sleep
  • Decrease chances of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke

How much physical activity do I need?

  • For Adults 18 – 62 years old: At least 2 hours and 30 minutes of aerobic physical activity a week
    • Spread this time out throughout the week.  Set specific days of the week that you will participate in an aerobic physical activity of your choice whether walking, running, dancing fitness, or even playing soccer in the yard with the kids.
  • Children 6 – 17: 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily
  • Children 2 -5 years old: No specific amount of time recommended.  Should remain active throughout the day.
