97.5 Y Country Medical Minute – Bike Safety, Wear Your Helmet

It finally feels like spring outdoors and your children are ready to get outside and play.   Spring is a great time to get out the bicycles and ride up and down the driveway or even around the block.   This week’s Y-Country Medical Minute quickly discusses the importance of making sure your child wears a helmet EVERY time they get on their bicycle.

Why is it important my child wears a bike helmet?

Riding your bike is a lot of fun, but accidents do happen.  A helmet can help protect your child or teen from a serious brain or head injury.  A helmet reduces the risk of a head injury by more than 70%.

How do I make sure I choose the right helmet?

You can find bike helmets at most sporting-goods stores or even at your local Meijer’s, Target or Walmart.

Here is what to look for:

  • Make sure the helmet has a date of manufacture. This information is helpful in case the helmet is recalled.
  • Look for a label or sticker on the helmet that says ‘U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) certified. This label means the helmet has been tested for safety and meets the federal safety standards.

The Three 2’s

The three 2’s is an easier reminder while ensuring your child’s helmet fits nicely and is positioned correctly so it can do its job in keeping your child’s head safe.

  • The helmet should be level with the ground. No more than 2 fingers above the eyebrows.
  • There are 2 V straps that should sit just below your child’s earlobes.
  • Make sure the straps are adjusted and buckle the helmet. There should be no more than 2 finger width space between the strap and the chin.
